Street of Hope

Children who eat once a day and whose parents cannot afford to buy their only pair of shoes. Children who are being laughed at in school because of the poor clothing and whose parents have lost the will to love and to take care of them because of the alcohol addiction. Children who spend most of the day in the street. In the street, from where getting onto tram No. 7 these children can come to a place where they are loved, accepted, fed, given clothes and spend time with them.

Street of Hope - from Maskavas Street suburb to Vilande. We, Vilande Church, decided to start society “Street of Hope” in order to help these children see Hope in their situations whatever it might be like.

In 2012 we organised the first day camp in Maskavas dārzs. Every child was invited to spend four wonderful and challenging days with almost 70 children. We got to know a boy who is being raised by his grandmother. He came to the camp wearing shoes that were two sizes too small and therefore he did not take part in the sports games. We went to Depo store to buy shoes for him.

We got to know many more other children, who each had their own needs and story of life. We understood that it is not enough with the camp alone - we started to meet children three times a year at Vilande Church - we spent time together and told them about God. We sent them home with bags full of food.

In 2013 we organised a day camp in Maskavas dārzs again - a few more children came - yet again with their own stories and problems. After the camp we developed the sports program, we rented a sports hall and we met some of the children every week - we spent time together while doing sports.

In 2014 we decided to organise an overnight camp “Street of Hope". 27 children signed up for the camp (the number of spaces was limited). Thanks to our friends from Richardson, USA, and sponsors from Latvia this camp was free for the children. Children were really hungry for love and attention. We were tired, yet happy. We spent three unforgettable days together - singing, making crafts, playing games and sports and learning about God together.

Tram No. 7 continues its way along the Street of Hope - from Maskačka to Vilande and back. Every meeting with these children gives Hope to us and above all - Hope for these children.

We invite you to support this work materially or by getting involved yourself.
